Wine Tourism’s Surprising New Destinations ( By Hannah Karp )
“To our surprise, Arizona wines topped nearly every category in our tasting, beating even the California ringers.”
“For many wine tourists, the thrill is in the chase. Last month Dan and Judi Kvachuk were driving along Page Springs Road, south of Sedona, when they stumbled on a winery called Javelina Leap. Owner Rod Snapp is just getting it up and running—he’s still waiting for his vines to mature, and his open-air tasting room is open only on weekends—but he invited the retired Salt Lake City couple inside for a weekday cellar tour. Mr. Snapp opened a bottle of Zinfandel he makes from grapes grown in Paso Robles, Calif., and the threesome emerged an hour and a half later, having finished the bottle. “We didn’t want to leave,” Ms. Kvachuk says.”

“Now there’s a man with a passion. And if the 2004 Zinfandel that the Snapp Family poured at last Saturday’s ZAP Festival (in Rod’s favorite city, San Francisco) is any indication, we can expect plenty of bottles full of passionate northern Arizona tastiness in the years to come. In fact, I’ve just marked my 2010 calendar and will be watching winerelease.com early that year for 2008 Zins from Javelina Leap. There aren’t any Arizona wineries listed on Wine Release yet, but I’m sure that there will be within the next 3 years.”

“1. Javelina Leap Vineyard & Winery: 2005 Zinfandel This wine fires on all eight cylinders and races through your senses. Voluptuous mouth feel and lingering finish. Who could have thought that a zinfandel from Arizona would take the checkered flag from California?”

“Rod Snapp’s style of red zinfandel is making a significant mark on the northern California wine scene. His Javelina Leap zinfandel created a buzz at the Zinfandel Advocates and Producers (ZAP) Festival earlier this year. Born from the volcanic slopes along Oak Creek’s riparian greenbelt,”

“His Zinfandel tasted good, by my standards. I observed in my first sip nuances of honey. A second sip, which I sloshed about in my mouth, revealed a broader texture and a whisper of whiskey, haunted by a distant mirage of, um, meringue . The wine would have gone well with grilled Chinook salmon, drizzled with butter, lemon and dill. I love salmon. I also would have enjoyed the wine with some handmade corn tortillas and fresh guacamole, a fresh cherimoya, or a dish of Thai tofu curry. It was a remarkably versatile wine.”
